Police issue appeal following one year anniversary of the murder of Georgina Edmonds

Georgina Edmonds

Georgina Edmonds

Detectives from Hampshire Constabulary’s Major Crime Department are repeating their appeal for information on the lead up to the one year anniversary of the murder of Georgina Edmonds.

Georgina Edmonds’ son and a family friend found Mrs Edmonds’ body in the kitchen of her home on Kiln Lane, Brambridge, at around 5.45pm on Friday, January 11 2008. Police believe the incident took place at some time between 11.15am and 3.15pm on the same day.

The post mortem examination revealed that Mrs Edmonds died as a result of extensive head injuries, caused by a marble rolling pin which belonged to Mrs Edmonds. Mrs Edmonds also sustained a number of other injuries during the attack including a number of apparent stab wounds to her body.

Officers believe Mrs Edmonds was tortured before she was killed and that the offender or offenders used a knife to cause puncture wounds to her body, possibly in an attempt to force her to disclose the PIN for her cash card.

One year on and detectives are still working to identify the person or people responsible for carrying out this vicious attack, and are continuing their appeal to the public for their help.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Barton, said:

“It is nearly one year since this horrific attack on Georgina Edmonds and we are again, appealing to the community to continue to come forward with information.

“We are very grateful for the response we have had since January 11 2008, and through the amount of calls we have received, it is clear that the community want to help us find the person or people responsible.

“Though many people have contacted us, both immediately after the incident and in the months since then, we believe there are still people out there who know something about this appalling incident. They may have heard something but don’t think it’s important, or they may know it’s important but not want to come forward.

“Someone may have suspicions about a friend, relative or neighbour and may be concerned about contacting the police in case it turns out that they are not connected to the incident. Once we have the information we can then take the appropriate action and through our investigation ascertain whether or not this person is involved in the crime.

“I would like to reassure people that we will do everything we can to help them if they need support in telling us what they know. Every tiny detail must be gathered so that we can catch the person or people who carried out this horrific attack.

“We are keeping an open mind as to the motive of this attack and the sort of offender who committed this terrible crime. “Do you know or suspect anybody that would have had the opportunity to commit this crime on Friday, January 11 2008?

“Do you know or suspect anybody of using the victim’s stolen ATM card at the Tesco Express, Twyford Road, at 10.38pm on the same day? “Do you know anybody that has left the area since the day of the murder or has stopped using the Tesco Express store and ATM?

“Have you noticed a change in behaviour or character of any person but particularly those that might have connections either to Twyford Road or Kiln Lane or both?

“I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and speak to us to help us find the person or people responsible for this crime before they have the opportunity to carry out any other similar offences.

“A £30,000 reward is available and I hope this money will encourage people to come forward. No matter how small or insignificant you think the information you have may be, please come forward and pass it on to us as your information could lead us to the person responsible for this atrocious crime.”

Anyone with any information about this incident should contact the Operation Columbian investigation team at Hulse Road on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers, the charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Alternatively information can be sent to FREEPOST, OPERATION COLUMBIAN or emailed to operation.columbian@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

Who used cash card?

At 10.40pm on Friday, January 11 2008, an unknown man, wearing a distinctive fluorescent yellow jacket, used Mrs Edmonds’ cash card at the ATM machine at Tesco Express Twyford Road, Eastleigh.

Officers are appealing to anyone who saw this man or anyone who may have any information about who he may be.

Unidentified people using Tesco Express

Officers have released images of 52 people who used the tills inside Tesco Express, Twyford Road, Eastleigh between 10pm and 11pm on Friday, January 11 2008, around the same time the unknown man used Mrs Edmonds’ cash card at the ATM outside the store.

So far, the majority of these people have come forward and officers are appealing for the remaining three people to get in touch with the police.

E-fits

Police have released e-fit pictures of a number of people they would like to speak to. These people were seen in the Brambridge area on the day of the murder and officers are urging them, or anyone who knows them to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Barton said:

“All murder investigations are very complex and due to the nature of these sorts of incidents and the volume of calls and information police receive, there will always be people we need to speak to, to see if they have any further information to help the investigation and/or eliminate them from enquiries.

“These people may have entirely legitimate reasons why they were in the area, but we need to speak to them as they could be potential witnesses. If you were in the area of Brambridge on January 11, or you recognise anyone from the map, please get in contact with us.”

Missing Items

A number of personal items belonging to Mrs Edmonds were discovered missing after her body was found. Police are still keen to trace these:

  • brightly coloured, red, yellow and green key fob
  • Lloyds cheque book and cash card
  • black Radley handbag with a green or turquoise Radley Scottish terrier logo badge attached to it
  • silver credit card holder

    Junaid Kahn

    Junaid Kahn

Police investigating the murder of Junaid Khan in Oldham are currently searching a number of addresses in Oldham and Tameside.

It’s the second day of searches by officers who are looking for anything that may assist them in finding whoever shot Junaid in cold blood in the early hours of Thursday 9 July 2009.

Two people were arrested after ammunition and cash was recovered from an address on Lauriston Close, Gatley yesterday.

The 21-year-old man and 26-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possession of ammunition and money laundering.

The man is currently in police custody and the woman has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Officers are continuing to appeal for help from the public, particularly about three cars that could be linked to the murder:

A white BMW was found parked on Fold Green, Chadderton, after Junaid’s murder, close to where the silver Mitsubishi was abandoned and set on fire.

The car has been linked to a shooting in Preston on the evening of Wednesday 8 July 2009, and two people have been charged in connection with this case.

Greater Manchester Police is keen to hear from anyone that may have seen the BMW in the Oldham area prior to Junaid being shot.

The silver Mitsubishi Shogun, believed to have been used in the shooting, was stolen from a house on Haigh Moor Road, Tingley, West Yorkshire, in the early hours of Saturday 30 May 2009.

A blue BMW, registration MT08 JUV was also stolen from the house and remains outstanding.

Officers are appealing to anyone that may have information about the burglary, or the movements of the two cars from 30 May 2009 to contact them.

Junaid was shot from behind a number of times in the Block Lane surgery car park, Chadderton, at 12.10am.

As he lay on the ground, the gunman approached and shot him again at close range with an automatic weapon.

A post mortem examination concluded he died as a result of multiple gun shot wounds.

The stolen Shogun was seen in the area around the time of the shooting and driving along Block Lane after the shots were heard.

It was found abandoned and on fire in a car park near to the Akora Steakhouse, Broadway, Chadderton, a short time later.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Eckersley said:

“At this stage we are looking into whether this white BMW is of any relevance to our investigation and I am keen to speak to anyone that may have seen it in the lead up to Junaid’s murder.

“Information about the two stolen cars and their movements between 30 May and 9 July could also prove vital to our investigation.

“Junaid was gunned down in a horrific attack and it is vital that we work with the community to find the people responsible, not only will it make the streets safer but his family will at least see justice for their tragic loss.

“If you have any information, no matter how insignificant you may think it is, I urge you to do the right thing and speak to me.”

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Major Incident Team on 0161 856 3691.

Police appeal as body of missing woman discovered: Banstead Woods, Surrey

    leave a comment »

Linda Casey, body discovered in Banstead Woods

Linda Casey, body discovered in Banstead Woods

Dog-walkers and pub-goers may be able to help detectives piece together the last hours of a woman whose body was found in Banstead Woods.

Fingerprint matching has tonight confirmed that the body – found shortly before 11am yesterday – is that of 54-year-old Linda Casey from Coulsdon, who was reported missing by family members to the Metropolitan Police on Monday.

Earlier today, a post mortem at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford found serious head injuries, but could not establish the cause of death.

A forensic team and specialist search officers are still examining the scene amongst dense undergrowth in Great Solom’s Wood, an area of Banstead Woods near Chipstead.

A black Vauxhall Corsa registered to Linda Casey and found close to Park Road in Banstead has also been recovered for inspection.

The 50-year-old man from Wallington arrested on suspicion of murder remains in custody at Woking police station and interviewing continues.

Detectives believe people in the area last weekend could assist them in establishing the circumstances leading to the death.

Senior Investigation Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Chris Raymer said:

“We believe Linda Casey and her killer knew each other and that they may have parked in the Ramblers Rest pub car park in either a black Vauxhall Corsa or a white Ford Escort van.

“We then think they walked through fields behind the car park, up the nearby hill and into woodland at the top.

“People who were at the pub or walking in the area – perhaps with their dog -may well have seen Linda with another person.

“They may also have heard a struggle or other suspicious sounds in the woodland at the top of the nearby hill.

“I would ask anyone who was there over the weekend to take a close look at her picture and think if they remember seeing her.

“She was wearing a turquoise vest top, a dark blue cardigan, light blue three-quarter-length jeans and white sandals.

“The pair were most likely in the area between 10am and 6pm on Saturday, but I would ask anyone who had contact with Linda anytime after Friday to get in touch.

“Close friends of hers who we have not yet spoken to should also give us a call, as they could help us build a better picture of her life.”

Officers will be visiting car parks surrounding Banstead Woods tomorrow, to speak to people who may have also been there the previous week.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Emotional plea by family to catch killer of Carl Beatson Asiedu: Kennington

    leave a comment »

The family of student Carl Beatson Asiedu, who was murdered after DJ-ing at a south London nightclub, today made an emotional appeal for witnesses to come forward and help detectives catch his killer.

Speaking at the scene of his murder in Glasshouse Walk, Kennington, his sister Annabelle, 24, told how her brother was loved by everyone and how his death has left a huge hole not just in her and her family’s life, but also in the lives of all those who knew him.

She said her brother, who was studying media production at Leicester University, was a loving, sensitive and caring brother to her and her sister Pearl, 27, and could not have been a better son to their parents, John and Hilda.

“The irreparable damage and the void we now feel in our lives for our only brother and only son is indescribable.

“How can it be that parents or older siblings should select a coffin for the baby of the family.

“Carl was extremely talented, charming and always smiling.

“Carl was so funny he could make you cry with laughter; he was so unique that he was and always will be unforgettable.

“Despite knowing he was popular amongst his peers Carl was always humble and down to earth, so much so that we his family never expected over 8000 tributes to be posted on Facebook.

“He was generous, kind and sensitive he loved his family, his friends and his music and we loved him,” said Annabelle.

“Carl enjoyed life and did as much as he could to live it to the fullest.

“He worked with the police voluntarily to help in their campaigns to tackle knife crime and along with a friend even started his own business.

“In his free time he enjoyed acting, producing videos and music and joining his friends as a DJ for various events.

“He made every effort to be at church on Sundays and even shared his love for music with the younger children by teaching and encouraging them to play the drums whenever the opportunity arose.

“Carl told me the week before he was taken from us that he was going to be famous before the end of the summer, in his own words he said he was allergic to being broke, addicted to achievement and success was his catalyst.

“He wanted to make headlines for his achievements and to prove that with hard work and determination anyone from any background could achieve greatness.

“His premature, senseless and brutal murder has destroyed these aspirations and left permanent scars in the lives of so many people,” she said.

DI Chris Le Pere, of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said:

“This is a tragic case of a young man whose life was cut short when he had everything to look forward to and much potential to fulfill.

“He was very popular and it could have been this very popularity and his success that resulted in his murder, prompted by jealousy and envy.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about what happened to Carl that night and why he was stabbed to contact us.

“Don’t rely on someone else telling us, take responsibility and come forward.

“We need to catch whoever did this and ensure that they can’t take another young life and leave another family devastated.”

Anyone with information is urged to call the police now on 020 8721 4005 or email carlsappeal@met.police.uk

Alternatively call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Background: Carl was stabbed shortly after leaving the Club Life nightclub in Goding Street, Kennington SE11, just after 05:00hrs on Saturday 1 August. He had been doing a set as a DJ with a friend.

When friends realised he had been seriously hurt they put him in a car and tried to get him to hospital. Police discovered Carl in the car when they stopped it after it ran through a red light in Baylis Road, SE1.

London Ambulance Service and the air ambulance attended, but Carl, from Norbury, south London, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A post-mortem gave the cause of death as stab injuries.

A friend who was with him at the time was also stabbed, but was released from hospital after treatment.

Eight arrests have already been made in connection with this case and they have been bailed to return on various dates.

Police exhume body of suspect in 30-year-old murder: Southampton [UPDATE]

    leave a comment »

    Update: Wed 12/08/2009 11:06

Statement from Detective Chief Inspector Phil McTavish – SIO

Earlier this morning, police exhumed the body of the man who is being investigated as a suspect for the rape and murder of Teresa De Simone in 1979.

We have very strong scientific and evidential support for this exhumation. All possible preliminary tests and evidence gathering was undertaken before considering this exhumation. It is not an action that is undertaken lightly. Authorities have been granted by the Ministry of Justice.

However, only DNA testing can confirm or refute our suspicions. The proposed DNA testing will be undertaken by the Forensic Science Service, which has worked alongside the investigation from the start. Tests will take between five and six weeks and, subject to the outcome of the tests, a file of evidence will be submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for their consideration.

Although we will not confirm the suspect’s identity, we can tell you he was a young man at the time, and he did not come from Southampton. He appears to have had no prior link to Teresa. Now, he has been linked to the investigation through research and DNA science. He did not feature in the original murder investigation of 1979.

A detailed search of papers in the original inquiry did not yield any new material. However, we did find unconnected papers which contained references to a few individuals who made various admissions to Teresa’s murder.

We have established that this suspect was one of seven men who made admissions. He made these admissions while in custody on unrelated matters some 18 months after Robert Hodgson’s conviction. The suspect took his own life in 1988.

Teresa’s family have been fully informed of the developments, and we hope that his process may ultimately provide some form of resolution for them. Their continuing support and understanding has been of great assistance to the investigation.

Police exhume body of suspect in 30-year-old murder: Southampton

    leave a comment »

Update: Wed 12/08/2009 08:25 Police confirm new suspect in Teresa De Simone murder case is dead

Following the reopening of the investigation into the murder of Teresa De Simone in Southampton in 1979, the investigation team has declared a suspect.

The suspect is dead and the investigation team has exhumed his body in order to obtain further DNA evidence.

The exhumation has taken place at Kingston Cemetery in Portsmouth today (Wednesday August, 12).

The development in the case comes following research by the investigation team, coupled with the DNA screening of over 100 people since March and advances in forensic science since the murder.

The fact that the suspect is deceased clearly poses further significant challenges for the Serious Crime Review Team, who will now undertake a lengthy and detailed process to try and fully establish the link between the suspect and the owner of the new DNA (crime scene) profile developed by the Forensic Science Service (FSS).

Whilst further work is currently ongoing in order to maximise the DNA evidence with the FSS, the enquiry team are confident that they are on the right track and may solve this 30-year-old murder case.

The SIO, DCI Phil McTavish has asked that the media respect the privacy of both Teresa’s parents and relatives of the deceased suspect.

This is a highly traumatic and sensitive issue for the families concerned and it is imperative that the investigation team is allowed to complete the necessary enquiries and provide the necessary support to them.

Original appeal: Following the reopening of the investigation into the murder of Teresa De Simone 30 years ago, there has been a significant development in the case and a suspect has been declared.

The body of Teresa De Simone, 22, was found on December 5, 1979, in her car parked at the rear of the Tom Tackle pub in Commercial Road, Southampton.

She had been raped and murdered.

The case was reopened by Hampshire Constabulary in March this year and this latest development comes following research and enquiries by the investigation team, coupled with advances in forensic science and DNA evidence since the murder.

This factor clearly poses some significant further challenges for the force’s Serious Crime Review Team, who will now be involved in a lengthy and complex process to fully explore the link between the suspect and the owner of the DNA (crime scene/ offender) profile developed by the Forensic Science Service earlier this year.

Teresa’s family has been updated with the latest developments.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil McTavish, who is leading the investigation, said:

“Whilst work is ongoing to maximise DNA evidence, the enquiry team is confident they are on the right track and hopefully could be close to solving this 30 year old murder.”

“The investigation team is working closely with the Forensic Science Service to fully review all of the DNA evidence in the case in light of the new suspect and ultimately our aim is to prove or disprove this man’s involvement in Teresa’s murder.”

Note: no further information is available at this time.
